MUST Construction Careers Building Trades Roadshow tour provides counselors with hands-on construction skilled trades experiences and information on Apprenticeship pathways

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

For the third year, educators and guidance counselors throughout the region will get a first-hand look and hands-on experience at the wide variety of opportunities in the skilled construction industry and apprenticeships during the MUST/Building Trades Roadshow.

The MUST Construction Careers/Building Trades Apprenticeship Roadshow on Thursday, February 27th (rundown below) draws career professionals from high school, middle school and elementary schools in the region and seeks to expand knowledge and understanding of Union Apprenticeships and trade careers and is sponsored by a consortium of the areas skilled construction trade unions and contractor employers.

“It’s one of the best professional development opportunities I’ve ever been involved with,”

said Denise Vener, a Counselor at Chippewa Valley Schools, who attended a past Roadshow event.   “I’ve been a counselor for over twenty years so that really says something.” The Roadshow provides valuable insight for area high school educators, so they can better explain the options and opportunities within the skilled construction trades.

Career counselors play an important role in connecting students and parents to construction skilled trades apprenticeships.  Since inception, the Roadshow program, has reached over 400 counselors from a variety of schools throughout the region. Today, a group of 100 Roadshow participants will learn about all union construction apprenticeships and they travel via coach, touring and rolling up their sleeves at four union apprenticeship facilities in Macomb and Oakland Counties (Electrical, Sheet Metal, Pipefitters, Plumbing).

The construction industry is booming in Michigan right now and opportunities are available for qualified, motivated individuals in many areas of the union skilled construction trades.

In addition to sponsoring the Roadshow, MUST Construction Careers and the Michigan Building and Construction Trade Council created  www.MUSTCareers.org a one-stop website where students, educators, and parents can learn about the wide array of opportunities in the skilled trades.

Union construction skilled trades apprenticeship programs provide earn-while-you-learn wages, on-the-job training and excellent benefits and retirement programs.   Apprenticeship programs are a viable alternative to the cost of a four-year degree and potential student loan debt and are funded privately in partnership between labor unions and management.
